Urinary incontinence -- the inability to keep urine in your body until you decide to release it -- can have several causes. The muscular and neural systems that control the retention or release of urine are complex, and they can be affected by illness, medications, urinary tract infections, prostate gland problems, or an operation on the urinary tract.

There are several different types of urinary incontinence:

Stress Incontinence
This is the most common form of incontinence, and results from weak bladder muscles. It's not a heavy flow, but a small release of urine when you, for example, lift something, sneeze, laugh, or kneel down to work in the garden.

Urge Incontinence
When the urge to void cannot be controlled until reaching a toilet it is called urge incontinence. The ability to exercise sphincter control is weak.

Overflow Incontinence
Overflow incontinence results from a person's inability to completely empty their bladder. The result can range from a dribble to almost continuous leakage. Men with prostate problems often experience this form of incontinence

Some forms of incontinence are temporary... others may be permanent.
